HOW TO MAKE YOUR NEXT BEVERAGE CHOICE ECO-FRIENDLY

Buying products that are eco-friendly and made sustainably is not a new consumer trend, but it is on the rise.

As consumers worldwide increasingly embrace social causes, they are choosing products and brands that align with their values, especially eco-related ones, reports one 2020 IBM study. Nearly eight in 10 consumers place a high importance on sustainability, 57% are willing to change their shopping habits to reduce environmental impact and more than 70% say they’ll pay more to buy brands that are sustainable and environmentally responsible.

“With sustainability front and center, consumers do more than just check the list of ingredients on a label. They want details about sourcing, how products are made or processed, as well as how they are delivered,” the study reports.

Due to their popularity, bottled beverages are among the greatest opportunities for eco-friendly advancement. Millions of consumers worldwide consume a variety of beverages at home and on-the-go each day. Here are three simple ways consumers can make their next sip truly count for our planet.

Purchase beverages in plastic bottles made with recycled content. Be aware of how the bottles used for your favorite drinks are made and buy from companies that are proactively reducing their use of virgin plastic to address the world’s plastic waste problem.

Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages (CCSWB), a company of Arca Continental, manufactures, markets and distributes beverages of The Coca-Cola Company across Texas and parts of Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arkansas. CCSWB is leading the way nationally in such efforts by doubling its use of recycled content across its entire plastic packaging portfolio, significantly reducing the company’s use of virgin plastic. By the end of 2021, every plastic bottle CCSWB produces will contain 50 percent recycled content, making them the first bottler in the U.S. to use recycled plastic (rPET) in its entire plastic packaging portfolio. In fact, CCSWB is hitting Coca-Cola’s World Without Waste goal nine years ahead of schedule with this rPET packaging model, which reduces energy, better controls greenhouse gas emissions and helps reduce the nearly 27 million tons of plastic waste that ends up in landfills each year.

“Demand for using recycled content for packaging is only going to rise in the future — particularly for food and beverage brands — as companies realize it is the most responsible and smartest way to conduct business,” explains Debbie Moody, CCSWB’s vice president of public affairs, communications and sustainability. “We are proud to be on the leading front of this sustainable packaging method, and we hope to continue to set the pace of our nation’s beverage industry regarding sustainable practices.”

Recycle your own beverage bottles. Play your part in the “circle of life” of plastic by sorting them and placing them at curbside or transferring them to local recycling centers. Check the bottle for clear labeling to ensure it is 100% recyclable — including the cap. Beverage companies like CCSWB are committed to making old bottles into new ones by collecting the bottles you recycle. American Beverage’s Every Bottle Back initiative has been a motivator for companies to literally “get every bottle back” from consumers, spurring innovation of products and improvement of local recycling infrastructure that helps keep plastic bottles out of our oceans, rivers, beaches and landfills. Your small act of recycling can make a difference because the beverage industry is united in action to make the lifecycle of its plastic circular.

Find companies that give back. From shoe companies to coat retailers and exercise equipment manufacturers, many brands are proactive in giving back to their communities. This can be through their philanthropic giving, as well as their sustainability practices that are encouraging change by empowering others to be eco-minded. Beverage companies do this too. For instance, CCSWB is encouraging recycling in the areas it services by providing $100,000 in grants to community recycling organizations in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. Conducting a quick online search to learn about the companies who make your favorite items could help you determine a buying choice that actually gives back.

Working together, consumers and companies can make a difference in the future of our environment by buying and producing products that are on the side of sustainability. Next time you reach for your favorite bottled refreshment, consider whether that business is going about business in sustainable and eco-friendly ways. Because every bottle counts.

COCA-COLA SOUTHWEST BEVERAGES TAKES ACTION TO INCREASE USE OF RECYCLED MATERIALS IN PACKAGING DESIGN

Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages (CCSWB), a company of Arca Continental, continues to affirm its sustainability leadership with a commitment to double the amount of recycled content across its entire plastic packaging portfolio and significantly reduce its use of virgin plastic.

“Our bottles are made to be remade,” said Debbie Moody, VP of Public Affairs, Communications and Sustainability, CCSWB.We promote a circular economy – which is an integral part of our business growth strategy – by making our packaging sustainable and reincorporating our bottles into the value chain at the end of their lifecycle.”

Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages (CCSWB) recently announced plans to double the amount of recycled content across its entire plastic packaging portfolio, significantly reducing the company’s use of virgin plastic.  By the end of 2021, recycled PET (rPET) will account for 50% of every new plastic bottle the local Coca-Cola bottler produces. CCSWB recently rolled out 20-oz. bottles of DASANI and Coca-Cola Trademark brands (Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Coca-Cola flavors) made entirely from 100% rPET and will roll out new 13.2-oz. 100% rPET bottles of Coca-Cola Trademark brands in June.

CCSWB, which manufactures, markets and distributes beverages of The Coca-Cola Company for markets across Texas and in parts of New Mexico, Oklahoma and Arkansas, is the first Coca-Cola bottler in the U.S. to achieve the World Without Waste goal to make all of its PET bottles with 50% recycled content by 2030.

“We will hit this target nine years ahead of schedule thanks to the investments we’re making and the proactive actions we’re taking,” Moody added. “This development is the result of collaboration across our entire business – from procurement to supply chain to sustainability – and our ongoing commitment to leveraging sustainable packaging as a strategic growth driver.”

Over the last two years, CCSWB has proactively invested in innovation to design more resource-efficient packaging and step up use of recycled PET content in its bottles – increasing from 1.9% in 2019 to 25% in 2020 and 50% in 2021. The company also is taking steps to lightweight its bottles and reduce the carbon footprint of its secondary packaging like multipacks and labels.

“We are creating an integrated, end-to-end business model for PET, which is a valued commodity, by accelerating our focus on this in-demand packaging material,” Moody said. “Demand for resin will continue to rise as more companies enter this space, so we are taking steps now to secure recycled PET material so we can maintain supply.”

Using recycled PET reduces energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The process of making PET bottles with recycled PET material requires less energy and emits fewer GHGs than making a bottle using virgin, petroleum-based sources.

Announced in 2018, the World Without Waste global sustainable packaging platform also includes a goal to collect and recycle the equivalent of a bottle or can for every one The Coca-Cola Company sells globally by 2030, and to make 100% of its packaging recyclable by 2025.

CCSWB is working to capture and collect PET bottles in cities and counties across its territory so they can be recycled and remade into new bottles. By collaborating with local governments, community organizations and industry partners on recycling education and infrastructure programs – including the American Beverage Association’s (ABA) Every Bottle Back initiative in Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, and Broken Arrow, Okla. – the company is helping to create closed-loop recycling systems so rPET bottles can be collected and used to create raw material for new bottles.

To commemorate Earth Month (April), the company will award up to $100,000 in grants to community recycling organizations in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.

Internally, CCSWB is working to minimize the environmental footprint of its operations by ensuring all production facilities are 100% zero-waste/landfill-free. Other sustainability priorities include water conservation and energy efficiency initiatives.

ON GLOBAL RECYCLING DAY, AC REITERATES ITS COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING

  • Arca Continental presents results for its initiatives aimed at reducing pollution from plastic in every market it serves, including the largest food grade PET recycling facility in the world, PetStar, in Mexico; the first 100% recycled bottle in Peru; the Inclusive Recycling Program known as DAR in Ecuador; partnerships in the U.S. to encourage community recycling programs; and its returnable universal bottle in Argentina, among other projects.

Monterrey, Mexico May 17, 2019. Arca Continental, one of the top Coca-Cola bottlers worldwide, reiterates its commitment to managing waste and packaging in a sustainable manner by implementing a series of global and local initiatives in every market where it operates.

Besides heading PetStar —the largest food grade PET recycling facility in the world— in Mexico, Arca Continental Lindley launched the first bottle in Peru made 100% out of other bottles. It also leads the inclusive recycling program known as DAR, in Ecuador, in addition to promoting a returnable universal bottle in Argentina, and funding community recycling programs in the U.S.

Additionally, in 2018 in collaboration with 250 companies, universities, and civil organizations around the world, the company signed the Global Agreement on the New Plastics Economy run by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the UN, which strives to eradicate the root cause of waste and plastics pollution by implementing a new regulation regarding plastic packaging.

In Mexico it heads PetStar, the largest food grade PET recycling facility in the world.

Arca Continental, as part of the Coca-Cola Mexican Industry and in collaboration with other Mexican bottlers, has developed PetStar, a plant with the capacity to collect more than 3.1 billion PET bottles, which is equal to filling the Azteca soccer stadium 2.4 times. The facility produces annually 51,000 tons of recycled PET resin that is integrated into new bottles employed by the partners themselves.

PetStar is the largest food grade PET recycling facility in the world and operates a unique comprehensive bottle-to-bottle process that constitutes a benchmark for the circular economy worldwide, and it is also one of the Mexican companies that are signatories of the Global Agreement.

As a result of the PetStar operation, Arca Continental currently includes 28% of recycled content on average in its PET bottles and, in some cases, such as the Ciel water and Sprite packaging, 100% of the materials used in the bottles comes from other bottles.

Based on PetStar’s collection and recycling work, Arca Continental and its partners are currently able to recover 70% of the packaging they produce and market.

In Peru, Arca Continental Lindley launches the first bottle that is 100% recycled

As part of their commitment to achieving “A World Without Waste” and to responsibly manage PET packaging, Arca Continental Lindley and Coca-Cola Peru launched the first bottle in this country which is made 100% out of other bottles. The bottle was made for the San Luis water brand.

Design for these packages made out of 100% recycled bottles is part of the path the company is on to promote the circular economy. With this process we add value to plastic bottles so that they can become new bottles instead of waste.

With this measure, Arca Continental Lindley is voluntarily exceeding the goal for including recycled plastic in making new packaging, described in the Agreement for Clean Production signed last year with the Peruvian ministries of the Environment and of Production.

In Ecuador, it leads the inclusive recycling initiative

The Development, Environment, Recycling (DAR in Spanish) program is aimed at promoting a culture of inclusive recycling and boosting PET recovery efforts in Ecuador by generating better economic, social, and organizational conditions for base recyclers through a sustainable, shared value strategy that offers dignified access to recyclable materials, striving to promote this practice in the Ecuadorian society.

The pilot program was implemented in Quito in august 2018 and partnering with “Quito a Reciclar” initiative, benefits to 7,400 families of recyclers in the city, fostering the segregation and collection of recyclable materials with local allies in the public and private sectors.

With these and other actions, Arca Continental Ecuador has been able to recover 79% of the bottles produced and include on average 25% of recycled materials in its packaging.

Arca Continental Argentina promotes an universal returnable bottle

The operation in Argentina is promoting the use of returnable bottles through innovation and partnerships with its customers and suppliers by using an universal returnable PET bottle which can be used for different products, which makes it easier to reuse and recycle it.

With these and other efforts, Arca Continental Argentina’s portfolio now includes 50% returnable products and 20% recycled content in its PET packaging.

And in Texas, we are partnering with the Coca-Cola Foundation to increase recycling…

The Coca-Cola Foundation is providing funding to help tackle the world’s plastic waste problem one community at a time. The Foundation awarded $5.4 million in charitable grants to several communities in the U.S., including Houston, to fund community recycling pilots. In Houston, we are partnering with Keep Houston Beautiful to boost recycling rates and help inspire a grassroots movement.

In 2018, CCSWB promoted the “Weekend Without Waste,” impacting more than 100,000 Texans, collecting more than 1 ton of PET, and close than 70,000 bottles and cans, through activations in San Antonio, Dallas, Houston and Edinburg.
