ARCA CONTINENTAL’S CARBON FOOTPRINT REDUCTION PLAN VALIDATED BY SBTi

Monterrey, Mexico, September 14, 2023 – Arca Continental, one of the largest Coca-Cola bottlers in the world, announces its goal to reduce carbon emissions from its value chain by 2030. The goal has been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), an alliance between CDP, UN Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

As part of its commitment to build a sustainable future and combine efforts for climate change mitigation, Arca Continental operates a sustainable business model which has its own Carbon Footprint Reduction Plan with three pillars:

  1. Promotion of operational efficiency applies sustainable practices and optimization of systems. An example of this action item is the optimized carbonation process started in Mexico where beverages’ carbonic gas is diluted at higher temperatures. This will allow Arca to reduce energy and refrigerate gas consumption, as well as decrease the environmental impact of this process, It is predicted that if this process were implemented in all its production lines, industrial refrigeration demand could decrease by 50 percent.
  2. Incorporation of new technologies will allow Arca to promote innovative solutions and greater energy efficiency. For example, renewable energy use has increased by 33 percent from 2020 due to energy production projects in Argentina, Mexico and the United States. In Argentina, facilities produce energy with sugar cane, and similarly, PIASA in Mexico. Also, the first 100% electric trucks deployed for the Industria Mexicana de Coca-Cola, a transportation unit that estimates to save 9,400 gasoline liters, reducing 16 tons of CO2 emission per year. Also, Arca Continental Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages’ Northpoint facility in the United States operates with 100% renewable energy. Lastly 5 out of 6 production centers in Peru are I-REC certified for using renewable energy sources.
  3. The involvement of different actors among Arca’s value chain have become allies to achieve joint objectives. For example, through Tonicorp in Ecuador, 5 cattle farmers were Neutral Carbon Footprint certified, meaning that 100percent of their carbon emissions are mitigated. In addition, Arca works with its traditional channel clients in its territories to renew their cooling systems which use less energy and reduce their emissions. Additionally, Arca plans to reach A World Without Waste Initiative goals through PetStar, the world’s largest food-grade plastic PET recycling plant, which is accredited as Neutral Carbon. PETSTAR is the only recycling plant with a Cradle-to-Cradle certification. which helps Arca Continental  provide recycled resin to its supply chain while reducing emissions.

“When we signed our company’s adhesion to the Science Based Targets initiative, we did it with the strong belief to make a positive difference in people and the environment. By being part of this initiative and having our goals validated to achieve commitments of the Paris Agreement, we foster our industry competitiveness as well as we promote best practices to build a low carbon economy,” said Alejandro Molina, chief technical and supply chain officer for Arca Continental.

Arca Continental defines its course of action supported in science, adopting innovative solutions for reducing greenhouse gases emissions along its value chain, from packaging, manufacturing, and distribution.

“We will keep promoting continuous improvement projects and initiatives which strengthen AC’s sustainable business model, and which have a positive impact in the communities that we serve,” Molina said.

COCA-COLA SOUTHWEST BEVERAGES LEADS THE CHARGE IN SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING

(BPT) – By Abraham Tueme, CCSWB Director of Sustainability

When it comes to our environment, recycled plastic bottles are a tremendous benefit. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, 1 million plastic bottles are bought every minute worldwide — so every recycled bottle counts.

Many of these bottles are made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a type of plastic that is entirely recyclable and requires less energy to produce, cutting greenhouse emissions and waste. However, even these recyclable plastics find their way into the waste stream.

The National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR) found that in 2021, only 36.8% of PET bottles were recycled in North America. While this is a slight increase from previous years, it’s clear that more needs to be done to keep plastic bottles out of the waste stream.

Fortunately, there are ways to make plastic bottles more sustainable and Arca Continental Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages (CCSWB) is leading the charge. As CCSWB’s director of sustainability, I’ve seen firsthand how the company deploys a range of initiatives to lower our environmental footprint and protect natural resources, including maximizing our use of recycled plastic.

Sustainability in action

As one of the nation’s largest bottlers of Coca-Cola products, we see sustainability as our responsibility. It’s an opportunity to innovate and support our communities to make them beautiful, clean and happy. Last year, we became the first Coca-Cola bottler in the U.S. to use an average of 50% recycled PET (rPET) plastic in its bottles, a goal achieved nine years ahead of its initial goal of 2030. Additionally, we collect 7 out of 10 bottles we sell, working with our communities and customers to create recycling access for all.

Much of our efforts are inspired by The Coca-Cola Co.’s World Without Waste strategy, introduced in 2018 to solve the global plastic waste crisis. As part of this strategy, all our 13.2- and 20-ounce bottles of Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero and Dasani water are made entirely of rPET content.

CCSWB’s use of rPET has big payoffs in sustainability. Since early 2020, the company has reduced its carbon emissions by 32 million pounds, a 78-million-pound decrease in annual plastic waste and an 8% cut in its energy usage. Today, we recycle more than half of the bottles and cans we distribute.

Looking forward, our goal is to recycle 100% of our bottles and cans by 2030 and we are in the process of exploring all potential alternatives to get us there.

Community sustainability efforts

As a company of Arca Continental, we prioritize and incorporate sustainability in all aspects of our business. Our efforts not only support internal operations, but also promote sustainability in our local communities. This approach enables us to make a positive difference and protect the environments in which we operate.

CCSWB is also working to collect recyclable materials and promote sustainability in actionable ways in the territories we serve. We’re collaborating with local governments, community organizations and industry partners on recycling education and infrastructure programs to create closed-loop recycling systems. By doing so, rPET bottles and other recyclables can be collected and used to create raw materials for new bottles.

An excellent example of these community efforts happened during the 2023 NCAA Women’s Final Four Tournament in Dallas, Texas. CCSWB supported recycling at the American Airlines Center by installing 12 SmartSort units that use artificial intelligence to determine instantly whether a discarded item is recyclable. These machines can track how many items were recycled and where they were sent after being discarded, creating traceability and transparency in the recycling process.

We’re also helping municipalities enhance their recycling capabilities. For example, CCSWB began working in December 2020 with the McAllen Recycling Center and Keep McAllen Beautiful to boost capacity by improving processes and educating the community.

The project has been a tremendous success, with the recycling center tripling recycling output in just over two years. It’s amazing how quickly you can begin to see strides toward long-lasting impact. We are proud of the model and look forward replicating it with additional partners.

Making an impact beyond recycling

Our sustainability mission doesn’t stop with recycling plastic beverage bottles. CCSWB is making headway on several other initiatives. From purchasing renewable energy for deregulated locations in Texas to planting trees across Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Austin and the Travis County Watershed, we are invested in positively impacting the local environment.

CCSWB has several water initiatives underway. The company has donated to Ducks Unlimited to build a levee south of Dallas to recapture floodwaters and return them to the Trinity River. Additionally, to promote water replenishment across Texas, we’ve provided empty ingredient barrels to local nonprofits to collect rainwater. Our partnership with the Galveston Bay Foundation in particular has saved more than 20 million gallons of water since 2013.

Engaging the community with a hands-on approach is also an important part of our mission. CCSWB aids in environmental cleanups with local Keep America Beautiful/Keep Texas Beautiful chapters. This year, we sponsored Trinity Park Conservancy’s Earth Day efforts, providing volunteers to help the group and the City of Dallas with a local cleanup.

Sustainability isn’t just a concept. For CCSWB, it’s part of our business’s mission. To learn more about CCSWB and its sustainability mission, visit https://cocacolaswb.com/sustainability/.

COCA-COLA SOUTHWEST BEVERAGES SPONSORS NEW TECHNOLOGY LABS FOR BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF SAN ANTONIO

Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages (CCSWB) has partnered with Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio (BGCSA) to bring three new technology centers to Club members in the community. The $320,000 project includes three newly renovated labs with state-of-the-art laptops and new furniture for BGCSA youth to use for homework, college and career prep, and other important projects.

This project will support more than 570 members served at BGCSA’s Calderon, Eastside and Mays Clubhouses. Across all BGCSA Clubhouses, 95% of youth served are from historically marginalized communities that often lack equitable access to technology. The labs renovated and furnished by CCSWB will help bridge the digital divide that greatly impacts much of San Antonio’s youth.

“We’re proud to have partnered with BGCSA for many years to empower their mission to serve local youth,” said Jean Claude Tissot, president of CCSWB. “What began with an initial update of one computer lab in 2021, has become a building block to provide BGCSA kids critical access to technology.”

Boys & Girls Clubs San Antonio CEO Ada Saenz added, “BGCSA works to serve the youth that need us most in whatever ways possible. These three new tech labs are going to continually make long-term impacts on our youths’ outcomes.”

COCA-COLA SOUTHWEST BEVERAGES KNOWS WATER DOES A LOT

This month, Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages, a company of Arca Continental, is launching a new, statewide ad campaign called “Water Does a Lot.”  The campaign aims to spotlight the importance of water and CCSWB’s efforts to conserve it in its plants and through community efforts.

As part of the company’s ongoing sustainability efforts, it partnered with The Coca-Cola Foundation to pledge $2 million in support of The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) efforts to ensure this region has enough water to meet present and future needs as their respective populations continue to grow. This is a bi-national effort, in partnership with local experts across both of our geographies, leveraging the impact that initiatives on both sides of the border will have on the overall health on the watersheds where we currently operate.

The Nature Conservancy, a global environmental nonprofit working to create a world where people and nature can thrive, knows that nothing is more important to the future of our planet than abundant, clean fresh water. As water shortages continue to intensify in local watersheds and aquifers, business risks associated with water can be expected to increase sharply. This is particularly true in the southwestern region of the United States, where there is an increasing strain on freshwater resources. As evidenced during this year’s winter storm, drinking water availability and continuous operation of water utilities are critical to our communities and operations.

CCSWB’s interest in connecting water replenishment with innovative freshwater and agricultural initiatives in the areas that provide water to its many plant operations represents a global best practice. To reach this goal of safeguarding water supplies in both Texas and Mexico, TNC is developing ground-breaking, science-based strategies through our programs to protect freshwater and implement sustainable practices.

West Texas Water: TNC is collaborating with groundwater managers across the Devils River and Dolan Creek to conserve finite, regional freshwater resources, as well as the wildlife that depends on them downstream.

TX Sustainable Agriculture Program: TNC is actively working with landowners in central Texas (San Saba and Llano Rivers) to establish pilot projects that will incentivize irrigation efficiency improvements and crop rotations, such as multi-paddock rotational grazing.

TX Environmental Water Market: TNC is using market tools to adapt towards current water shortages, through the purchasing of water rights on three primary basins: Colorado River/Matagorda Bay, Trinity River/Galveston Bay, and San Antonio and Guadalupe Rivers/San Antonio Bay. To date, this effort has reduced the water extraction within this region by over 700 acre-feet, or 260 million gallons, of water per year.

CCSWB DEBUTS REGIONAL CAMPAIGN STARRING OUR HEROES AND NONPROFIT PARTNERS

Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages (CCSWB), a company of Arca Continental  and one of the largest Coca-Cola bottlers in the U.S., is rolling out a regional campaign featuring its community partners and real CCSWB associates. As the company celebrates its fifth year serving Texas and parts of Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arkansas, CCSWB’s campaign highlights its connection to the local communities it serves through the stories of its non-profit partnerships and local associates.

“Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages is the local Coca-Cola bottler, and our people are at the heart of everything we do,” said Jean Claude Tissot, president of Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages. “Whether volunteering with local community organizations or producing, delivering and selling Coca-Cola brands, the impact we have been able to have in the communities we serve is centered around our associates and passion for what they do.”

The campaign is the continuation of CCSWB’s first hiring campaign launched in February 2022 and highlights several aspects of the company’s culture. The stories range from inspirational to nostalgic, including:

  • An inspiring segment showcasing Special Olympics Texas athletes at a regional event supported by CCSWB associates
  • A heartfelt look at CCSWB team members in different scenarios from coaching baseball teams, to driving a Coca-Cola truck, illustrating the pride we have in serving where we live, and living where we serve.
  • A selection of side-by-side images showing the professional and personal sides of our associates, and how we bring the best of ourselves to serve our customers and communities.

CCSWB’s stories will be on television and radio stations across Texas and Oklahoma. If you’d like to become part of the team at CCSWB, visit www.opportunityfizzes.com.
