Artist Spotlight: Tay Butler

Find out how artist Tay Butler brings his experience of Black history into a new medium and what it means to him to celebrate Black History Month.

Get to know Tay:

Tay Butler is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Houston, TX. He received his BFA in Photography and Digital Media from the University of Houston and recently completed his MFA in the University of Arkansas' Photography program. After retiring from the US Army and abandoning a middle-class engineering career to search for purpose, Tay reignited a rich appreciation for Black history and a deep obsession with the Black archive. Using past and present images to create a historically-layered body of work, Tay reorients cultural material from the evergrowing Black experience. Tay currently teaches in the University of Houston's photo department, and has also led private and community workshops for Crystal Bridges Museum, Arkansas and The Center for Fine Art Photography, Colorado.

In Tay's's Words:

This collage combines Black history with the history of advertisements that incorporated Black people, with an emphasis on Coca-Cola. The company's ads were a staple of leading publications that Black households read and subscribed to for decades. Creating a "cloud" of community, small excerpts of advertising reach thru the crowd, bringing the famed bottle into focus.

At CCSWB, we live and work in the communities we serve. Through active volunteerism and millions of dollars in annual cash and product contributions, we're invested in helping our communities thrive. Our associates are just as diverse as the products we produce, and we care about what's important to them. We support their heritage, culture, legacy, tradition and what makes them each unique.

Sometimes, words aren't enough to capture personal experience. But as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words and through art, we can gain a better understanding of the world around us.

This year, CCSWB's Community Canvas is celebrating heritage by showcasing artists from Texas and Oklahoma. We value the abundant diversity in our communities and are proud to support organizations that do the same.

Education

We're committed to helping students fulfill their personal goals. Since 2021, we have donated more than $1 million in laptops to Texas high school and college-bound students.

Empowerment

We promote economic opportunity and job creation in our communities. Through volunteerism and donations, we support women-owned and minority-owned enterprises, veterans, and small businesses to advance growth and opportunity across our region.

Environment

We purchase 100% renewable energy across all our Texas-based deregulated locations — the first long-term energy contract of this size among North American Coca-Cola bottlers.
